Learn the golf swing GRIP used by the Pros

Learning the golf swing grip used by today’s PGA and LPGA touring golf professionals is easier than you might think. Do these professional golfers have secret knowledge about how to grip their clubs? No, they have been taught the proper techniques for holding their clubs in a simple and relaxed fashion. Read on to find out about what makes a good golf swing grip.

The best golf swing grip is a neutral grip. What is a neutral grip? It is a grip where the palms of the hands come together directly facing each other. For the right-handed golfer, the inside pad of the right thumb will rest directly over the thumb of the left hand to where both thumbs on the grip will be pointing straight down the golf shaft. The crease between the thumb and index finger of the right hand, once on the club, will be pointing toward the right shoulder. If your hands are in this position, you’re on your way to having the correct golf swing grip.

There are normally two types of correct golf swing grips: an overlapping grip and an interlocking grip. For the overlapping grip, the pinky finger of the right hand will overlap the left hand just between the index and middle finger of the left hand. For an interlocking grip, the pinky finger of the right hand will interlock with the index finger of the left hand. The interlocking grip is usually used by players that have smaller hands. It gives them better control of the golf club and they can swing the club easier with this type of golf swing grip.

The golf swing grip can also become too strong or too weak of a grip. A strong golf swing grip for the right-handed player is one where the right hand is turned further clockwise around the golf club grip while the left hand usually stays in the neutral position on the grip. Such a grip can promote an over-the-top swing with the club because the tendency in the backswing, or take-away, with this type grip is to bring the club too far around and inside of the players right side. Turning the right hand too far counter-clockwise around the grip and over the top of the left hand promotes a weak grip. A weak grip can hinder making a full backswing and not allow the hands to get into a proper cocked golf swing grip.

What is a proper cocked golf swing grip? The cocked golf swing grip is where a player starts with a neutral golf swing grip, then lifts the club up with both hands to where the wrists cock in a locked position. The players that can fully cock their wrists at the top of their back-swing normally make better contact with the golf ball during the follow through, and also hit the ball a much further distance than those that do not have a proper cocked golf swing grip.
